Peer Tutoring Tips and Techniques

Whether in person or virtual, peer tutoring can be a great resource for students who struggle with a concept. However, the most effective peer tutors guide and support understanding rather than merely show or tell.

Some of the following resources were created for virtual tutoring (labeled "Virtual Tutoring Tips") and others were created for in person tutoring (labeled "In Person Tutoring Tips,") but they all can be useful no matter the tutoring environment.

Tips and Techniques

Tips and Techniques:

  • Ask "What do you understand?" rather than "What do you NOT understand?"
    • Students are better articulate their understanding (they might not know what they don't know). You can fill in their holes as they explain their understanding of an assignment or problem.
  • Be patent
    • You may have to repeat yourself more than once
  • Refrain from commenting on how easy a problem, concept, or course is.
  • Show enthusiasm for learning
  • Actively teach study and organization skills
  • Use alternative methods and examples to help students understand a concept
  • Establish rapport and respect your tutees.
